Stress incontinence
What is urinary stress incontinence?
Stress urinary incontinence is the most common form of incontinence in women. It manifests itself as involuntary leakage of urine when pressure is applied to the bladder, caused by physical effort, sneezing, coughing or laughing.
These leaks occur without any feeling of urgency, and can affect daily, social and professional life.
What are the symptoms?
- Bladder weakness during physical exertion (sport, lifting),
- Leaks when coughing, sneezing or laughing,
- No associated sensation of urinary urgency,
- Loss of self-confidence, social awkwardness,
- Occasional skin irritation due to prolonged contact with urine.
What are the causes?
Stress incontinence is caused by an inadequate urinary sphincter or a relaxation of the pelvic floor, which no longer properly supports the urethra.
Common causes include:
1️⃣ Childbirth (trauma to the perineum),
2️⃣ Aging and menopause (hormone decline),
3️⃣ Previous pelvic surgeries,
4️⃣ The occurrence of repeated exertion or the intensive practice of certain sports,
5️⃣ Obesity or chronic cough (tobacco, respiratory diseases).
