Cystitis: understanding, preventing and treating urinary tract infections
What is cystitis?
Cystitis is a very common infection or inflammation of the bladder, especially in women. It manifests as unpleasant and sometimes painful urinary symptoms, often caused by a bacterial infection.
Although generally benign, cystitis can recur and disrupt daily life.
What are the symptoms?

- Frequent need to urinate, sometimes in very small quantities,
- Cloudy, foul-smelling or sometimes bloody urine,
- Pain or heaviness in the lower abdomen,
- Sometimes fever if the infection is more severe.
What are the causes?
1️⃣ Ascending bacterial infections, most often by Escherichia coli,
2️⃣ Poor bladder emptying or urinary residue,
3️⃣ Frequent or traumatic sexual relations,
4️⃣ Use of certain contraceptives (diaphragm, spermicides),
5️⃣ Anatomical or functional factors,
6️⃣ Immune system disorders.
