Genitourinary syndrome of the menopause
What is menopausal genitourinary syndrome?
Menopausal genitourinary syndrome (MGUS) is a group of symptoms linked to the reduction in female hormones after menopause, affecting the genital and urinary areas.
These changes can lead to vaginal dryness, pain during intercourse and various urinary disorders.
What are the symptoms?
- Vaginal dryness, irritation or itching,
- Pain or burning during intercourse (dyspareunia),
- Urinary urgency and/or incontinence,
- Sensation of discomfort or burning during urination,
- Frequent urinary tract infections,
- Intimate comfort problems that can affect quality of life.
What are the causes?
MUMS is mainly related to the decrease in estrogen, which leads to :
1️⃣ Thinning and weakening of the vaginal mucosa,
2️⃣ Changes in the balance of vaginal flora,
3️⃣ Reduced pelvic floor tone,
4️⃣ Reduced urinary tissue resistance.
